Today we remember those who were lost on September 11, 2001 and all soldiers lost while fighting for our country. While we take a moment for those lost in the tragedy, we should also reflect on the impact that fateful day has had on our United States.
After 9/11 many thought that a sense of normalcy was lost forever. Terrorists had come to American soil, and could possibly attack again. Travel on planes, particularly overseas travel, made everyone uneasy and for many was avoided altogether.
I remember my anxiety when my son Orlend went to New Zealand to intern in 2002. As a parent I prayed that security measures at airports were enough to stop the possibility of terrorist attacks here in America as well in foreign countries. I worried every day about his safety.
Since then as my daughter Dauline traveled overseas to Germany, France and the Netherlands to further her education, my anxiety each successive time faded.
This summer, as the plane left the Humphrey terminal in Bloomington, Minnesota to bring my daughter Candice to France for a summer semester, I felt the return to normalcy. I was confident in the anti-terrorist systems and thankful to my president and all those who have made us so safe since 9/11.
While President Bush may suffer in the polls, there is one area that no one can deny him all the credit and that is making us safer from attack here in America post 9/11.
We should all pray for continued success for our president and all those who keep America safe. We must also work to elect a president that has the experience to lead us into uncertain times.
As we pray for the families of those lost in 9/11 and for the families of our lost soldiers, we should also say a prayer of thanks for a safer America.
